Cornelius addresses are in Mecklenburg County and served by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Mooresville is in Iredell County; parts of the town are served by the Mooresville Graded School District and other areas by Iredell-Statesville Schools. Mooresville borders a large share of Lake Norman's northern shoreline, with long peninsulas and wide open water. Cornelius's shoreline around the southern end mixes coves, peninsulas and established lake communities closer to Charlotte.

Mooresville is widely known for its motorsports heritage and a historic downtown on Main Street. Cornelius's town-center identity is its Old Town arts district. Both have grown quickly along I-77, so commute patterns deserve a real-time test.
